Property in Puerto Banus | Information
Puerto Banus is a suburb of Nueva Andalucia which in turn is a suburb of the region making up greater Marbella. It was founded by Jose Banus who had already purchased the land that makes up Nueva Andalucia and whilst developing inland he also developed the marina and the surrounding properties which he opened in 1970. It has developed into a luxury marina and shopping complex and one of the main attractions on the Costa del Sol. No holiday is complete without a visit as most people have heard of Puerto Banus for its luxury and upmarket boutiques, famous restaurants, reputation, and amazing yachts.
The architect of the project was Noldi Schreck, he participated in the design and construction of Beverly Hills in the USA. He was visited by Jose Banus and persuaded him that the development should not be a collection of high rise apartment buildings but more a subdued yet sophisticated arrangement of low rise Andalucian style apartments and retail outlets.
There was a lavish opening in 1970 which was attended by such guests as the Aga Khan, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, Hugh Hefner of Playboy fame, Roman Polenski, and Christian Barnard among many others. It is reported that 300 waiters served, amongst other succulent dishes, 22 kilos of Beluga Caviar to more than 1700 guests from all over the world. “Banus” was now firmly on the map and drew in many other famous celebrities Sean Connery being one who had a fabulous villa-built fronting on to the beach.
A further development was announced in 2011, this being a 400-million-dollar investment by Qatari Sheik Abdullah Bin Nasser Al Thani to expand the Marbella marina in competition to “Banus”, but due to many legal battles this has yet to get off the drawing board.
The focal point of Puerto Banus is the marina which can berth up to 900 boats ranging from some of the most luxurious and large yachts in the world to the small day motorboats. There are on average about 5 million visitors yearly to Puerto Banus, in the main Spanish and Northern Europeans.
There are also many Arabs visiting from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait as the late King Saud of Saudi Arabia had a yacht moored in “Banus” for a large part of the year and of course the large palace that he had built on the Golden Mile in Marbella. This was a five-minute drive to Puerto Banus. Accompanying him on his annual visit to Marbella was a retinue numbering about 2000, they would arrive on a fleet of Jumbo Jets bring their own items such as cars, and of course they would spend a lot of money in the local luxury stores bringing much needed revenue to the town.
Puerto Banus property is more expensive than the surrounding areas, but the extra ingredient is the lifestyle you are buying Into. In the main most of the downtown properties are apartments, with villas on the periphery.
The Mediterranean in front and the colourful mountain backdrop behind make it the ideal place for property buyers that are looking for something different, a luxurious lifestyle that will be a sound investment in years to come.
Puerto Banus itself is located just outside of Marbella in the direction of Estepona. As you round the bend from the Golden Mile of Marbella you cannot miss the El Corte Ingles department store on your left and the restaurants high above you on the right.
