Calahonda is situated just to the east of Marbella city limits and is one of the largest and oldest urbanisations on the Costa del Sol. Calahonda is in fact a mega urbanisation made up of many micro urbanisations. It is now so large that it could almost qualify as a town, however it still comes under the administrative office of Mijas Ayuntamiento (Town Hall). It straddles the coast road A7 (N340) and has a direct access to the Autopista AP7 Toll road. By car it is 25 mins from the airport.
Calahonda originally grew from the coastal strip and it is here that you will find the most mature and developed areas along with the majority of the amenities, including chemists, three medical centres, supermarkets, and many bars and restaurants.
Calahonda has now stretched up the hills where the more modern developments are, being so high up almost all of the developments have spectacular sea views. The contours of the land have provided many opportunities for developers to build urbanisations with some stunning sea views.
It was originally developed by Don Juan de Orbaneja, beginning in 1963, being a community of urbanisations, it is maintained and managed by the owners paying a community fee, this is administered by a committee of owners. The area is still under the administration of Mijas Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) regarding such things a s IBI tax Land rates and Basura tax rubbish collection tax.
There are more than 27 Kilometres of roads approximately 7000 homes and, included in its total area of 60 hectares, many green spaces. The population is predominantly British with some Scandinavians and Germans.
Public transport in the form of buses serve the area well, and talks are proceeding to connect the coastal towns such as Calahonda to the Renfre train system, that will give fast and easy service to Malaga and the airport.
Stunning sea and mountain views from many of the properties make this the perfect place for relocation, for families with young children or retired couples, to buy full time residences or holiday homes.
A plan to construct a boardwalk along the entire length of the Costa del Sol is well underway so much so that Mijas have already constructed the portion that runs from Cabopino in Marbella to El Faro in Mijas Costa. This stretch is almost 8 Km long and has been built at the very edge where the beach meets the land. This has linked many of the Chiringuitos along the way and made them much more accessible and of course more popular. It is a favourite with residents and visitors alike to stroll along the boardwalk occasionally stopping to take some refreshment or even a meal.
The maturity of Calahonda gives a rural flavour and yet a coastal lifestyle, there are 10 golf courses within a 10 km radius, along with Calahonda’s own 9-hole course designed by Enrique Canales in the middle of the urbanisation. The Costa del Sol Tennis club is a large tennis facility and sports club offering tennis squash, paddle tennis and gym facilities. There are many schools within a few kilometres ranging from Spanish junior and secondary schools to a full international academy.
