Benalmadena is in actual fact an area made up of three different locations, those being Benalmadena Costa, Arroyo del la Miel and Benalmadena Pueblo. The administrative area stretches from the summit of the Sierra de Mijas to the shores of the Mediterranean. There is a permanent population of approx. 62,000 and it is the third-largest metropolitan area in the province behind Malaga and Torremolinos.
Inhabited since prehistoric times this was an influential Muslim area, hence the origins of the Arabic name, and was a haunt of many privateers in the 1500’s. These were based mainly on the north African coast but plundered the south of the Iberian peninsula in general but Benalmadena area in particular.
The area has many attractive beaches and places to visit like Colomares Castle, it is also home to the largest Buddhist temple in Europe at 33m tall, the Stupa. One of the favourite places to visit is a night at the casino, where not only can you have a flutter but also on occasions there will be a dinner show, featuring some of the top acts from Europe.
The Pueblo is the original quaint whitewashed Andalucian’ village nestling on the banks of the mountain about 3kms from the coast. There are many great bars and restaurants in the village which also houses the Administrative offices of Benalmadena Town Hall in which there is a foreigner’s department ready to assist the newly arrived with their many questions.
You can visit the Butterfly park and see the colourful beauty of butterflies in the heart of Costa del Sol, it is only 20 minutes from Malaga. It is a tropical paradise where over 1,500 butterflies from all over the world fly freely. You can learn some amazing facts about butterflies, beginning with reproduction through the chrysalis stage to the birthing process, there are also some other animals such as tortoise, wallaby, and a small dragon.
You can experience the art of the Flamenco dance in many places and attend one of the many festivals that occur throughout the area. There are many musical events not only in Benalmadena but in nearby villages and towns, in short the holiday visitor will never be short of accessible entertainment during their stay and using it as a centre for the Costa del Sol.
There are many urbanisations, made up of apartments and large villas. La Capellania being one urbanisation close to the Pueblo and is one of the most luxurious locations.
Benalmadena Costa has over 8km of blue flag beaches made of coves separated by picturesque rocky outcrops, these are easily accessed from the main coastal road stretching from Torremolinos to Fuengirola. There are many hotels, beach side cafes and restaurants (Chiringuitos). The main hub of the Costa for entertainment especially at night is the award-winning Marina, one of the largest on the Spanish Costas that can moor up to 1000 boats and yachts.
Alongside the marina is the Sea Life Aquarium and Selwo Marina theme parks with Dolphins, penguins, exotic bird life and sea lions.
The Torrequebrada section of Benalmadena is home to one of the area’s oldest golf courses, built in the 1970’s and is a popular course on the Costa del Sol, Torrequebrada is a delight to play with its mature course comprising of lakes, pine trees and wonderful sea views.
