Whilst there are a number of theories, it is uncertain as to where the Costa del Sol got its name, though it could be due to the single aspect of the region that everybody is aware of, especially in the summertime: the sun shines a lot here.

The sunny climate with over 300 days of the year with sunshine has made this beautiful coastline the premier tourist destination in Spain in visitor numbers and the area in Spain with the highest concentration of foreign residents.



The varied coastline of the Costa del Sol has diverse offerings; many long sandy beaches, coves half hidden amongst cliffs, marinas and fishing grounds. It is protected from cold north winds by the mountains and has a mild climate with sea breezes and scant rainfall. The vegetation is subtropical in character while oranges, lemons and olives grow in abundance. Away from the coast the scenery is largely mountainous and dotted with pretty, white Spanish villages, valleys and hillsides planted with orchards and spectacular views.

The most popular area is Western Costa del Sol with 100km of picturesque coastline that begins at Malaga city and stretches westward all the way to the border of Cadiz province.

This part of the coast is highly developed in terms of both property and infrastructure with the close proximity of Malaga International Airport (currently under expansion) and the airport at Gibraltar, making the entire coast easily accessible.

Malaga, the fifth largest city in Spain, is situated in the centre of the Costa del Sol contains a wealth of interesting features including fine gardens, a magnificent cathedral, the Alcazaba (an 11th century Moorish castle) and numerous museums and galleries. It is the birthplace of Picasso and his childhood home is a museum.

West of Malaga, the coastline includes the holiday resorts of Benalmadena , Fuengirola and Torremolinos, which are abundant with shops, bars and restaurants and ways to spend free time. Benalmadena boasts one of the most picturesque marinas in Europe, in addition to its charming hillside pueblo.

Carry on along the coast and you will reach the resorts of Mijas Costa, featuring La Cala, Calahonda and situated in the heart of Costa Del Sol, our home and base in Riviera del Sol.

The district of Marbella begins with the scenic port of Cabopino, with its miles of sandy beaches and a little further along the coast, you will find the developing area of Elviria.

The town of Marbella is an exciting mix of a traditional Spanish seaside town and a sophisticated, cosmopolitan city, home to a multitude of nationalities and fashions. The beaches are clean and inviting, the promenade is full of bars and restaurants, and the Old Quarter is an enchanting area of ancient walled streets, squares and churches.

At the other end of Marbella, you will find the Golden Mile, the road that links Marbella to the jet-set capital of Puerto Banus. Famous for its mix of designer boutiques, luxury yachts, beautiful people and latest fashions, by day or night, Puerto Banus offers something for everyone.

West of Puerto Banus you will drive through San Pedro, an expanding Spanish village. Inland from here, you will find Nueva Andalucia, otherwise known as Golf Valley, with several world class golf courses, such as Las Brisas, Los Naranjos and La Quinta.



In fact Costa del Sol is often referred to as the Costa del Golf, and its not surprising with a concentration of top quality golf courses and the glorious weather almost all year round.
